Georgia Bill Allows Low-THC Oil Statewide

In April of 2019, Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia, signed the Hope Act into law. (HB-324) Finally, patients in Georgia will now have access to cannabis oil with low amounts of THC. This bill was approved by the Senate (34-20), and the House (147-16).

The Georgia General Assembly passed a bill in 2015, allowing medial patients to possess 20 fluid ounces of medical marijuana oil, with THC levels around 5%. This law was later expanded by the legislature, adding more medical conditions to their list. Thanks to this program, more than 8,000 people are signed up!

The Georgia Act is going to allow six different producers to grow and harvest medical marijuana, along with two universities in the state. The Pharmacies will then be allowed to sell the medical marijuana, and private dispensaries could be authorized by regulators. Because marijuana is still federally illegal, it’s still too soon to tell whether universities or pharmacies will participate. Georgia predicts their legal sales will start in about a year.

Study Done By ACLU: Harsh Georgia Cannabis Law Results In Disproportionate Arrest Rates

Georgia could have some of the harshest laws on marijuana in our country. Getting caught with just 2 ounces of cannabis could land you in prison for 10 years! Beyond that, a new study shows that the laws in Georgia aren’t being enforced evenly.

ACLU did a study in 2013 and found that both whites and blacks use cannabis at the same rates, yet blacks are almost 4 times more likely to be arrested for cannabis possession.
