Illinois Becomes the 11th State to Legalize Cannabis

In June of 2019, J.B. Pritzker, the governor of Illinois made history by signing the CRTA, or Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act. The Senate and The House approved the bill that would allow adults over the age of 21 to purchase and possess cannabis starting at the first of the year in 2020.

With this signed bill, Illinois becomes the 11th state to legalize cannabis for adults, and was the first to approve these legal sales through the legislature other than using the ballot measure.

If you live in Illinois, you can purchase and possess up to 30 grams of cannabis. If you happen to be visiting, you can purchase half of that. On top of them legalizing cannabis, they also set up their market for processors, cultivators, testing labs, and retail stores. This also allows cities to choose whether they want marijuana cafés for on-site consumption.

Even though home cultivation, and home delivery were left off this bill, it is still a huge step forward for the state of Illinois. This monumental feat will help Illinois natives to set new standards for addressing the harm that decades of cannabis prohibition has caused. Learn more here.
