Legalization Group Formed For Marijuana; Report Findings by 2020 Session.
Early in 2019, the General Assembly, House speaker Michael Busch, and president of the Senate Mike Miller, started a work group to figure out the best ways to implement the legalization of cannabis. With the group working as we speak, they’ll have their findings submitted by the end of the year, and just in time for the 2020 session.
This group is designed to review issues on how Maryland could tax and license the cannabis industry, criminal justice impacts, public health effects, and how to promote participation by minority-owned, and woman-owned businesses.
Medical Marijuana Program Adds Edibles
In 2019, there were several bills introduced to improve the medical program in Maryland. The governor, Larry Hogan signed a bill allowing edible marijuana products to be an option for the patients in Maryland. This bill also allows research institutions to do studies on the effects of marijuana.
Marijuana Prosecution Ends in Baltimore
In January of 2019, The State Attorney of Baltimore, Marilyn Mosby announced that her office would no longer prosecute those caught possessing cannabis, regardless of your criminal past. This was a huge win for minorities in the city area, who happened to be the victims of most arrests for marijuana, since the decriminalization in 2014.
Expunging Past Offenses On Marijuana Is Easier With New Law in Place
SB-949 was a bill passed in 2017, which helped Maryland take a huge step forward in reducing expungement waiting periods from 10 years to 4 years.
This law helps those suffering from past marijuana convictions, which is a big factor in traveling, buying a house, getting an education, and finding a job.
