Surrounded by Legal Cannabis States; Progress is inevitable
Slowly, but surely, cannabis policy reform is sweeping across the Midwest. To the north of Indiana, Michigan will soon begin the sales of marijuana for adult-use, while its next door neighbor Illinois, just recently legalized cannabis for adults. On top of those two states converting, Ohio also has a comprehensive medical cannabis program. Indiana will soon join its neighboring states in time. In 2019, there were several reform policies introduced, but unfortunately got shut down before moving forward.
Legalization of Low-CBD and THC Oil Signed by Governor Holcomb
In March of 2018, the governor signed Act-52, which legalized low-CBD/THC that is derived from industrial hemp. The new bill allows anyone to buy/possess CBD oil, as long as the labeling of the oil meets the law requirements, and has less than .3% THC.
The bill also expanded the 2017 law, which was low-THC for patients that have seizures. Before only epileptic patients could use CBD oil, and they had no way of purchasing it. The law unfortunately doesn’t provide clarity on whether manufacturing CBD is legal in the state of Indiana.
The Current Cannabis Laws In Indiana
Indiana could have some of the most outdated, and harshest laws on Marijuana in the country. If you posses a single joint, you could find yourself behind bars for 1 year, and slapped with a fine of $5000.
In 2012, 85% of vehicle thefts and 90% of home invasions/burglaries went unsolved, according to the reports from the state to the FBI. In the same year Indiana law enforcement dedicated resources and time to citing or arresting over 9,000 people for cannabis-related offenses, and 86% were possession charges.
